Are you looking for your next camera? Are you trying to pick between lenses? Do you need something specific for a vacation or event that you don’t currently own? BorrowLenses might be the solution for you – try them today!
While buying new gear can be a lot of fun it does often come with a huge investment and sometimes this investment can be quite hard to justify if this particular piece of gear is for a specific event or shoot. For times like this renting can be a much more affordable option and one of the biggest and most well known camera gear renters is BorrowLenses. But what’s the experience like? Is it really worth it? Read on and let me explain.
What is Borrowlenses?
BorrowLenses is a company that allows you to rent lenses, camera bodies, and tons of other accessories for a fraction of the cost that it would require to own. They’ll ship the lenses to you and provide prepaid shipping labels for you to return the shipment to them it really couldn’t be any easier!
Honestly the hardest part about renting this top quality gear is that at some point you do have to give it back, but to be fair, it’s much better to do this than to run up the credit card balance with the plan of paying it off with events that you have yet to book.
What Makes Borrowlenses Awesome?
There are two main reasons why I’d recommend renting over buying and while they can seem to be common sense to some others might not see it as such.
Additional Event Gear
You could just take out a small business loan and buy a top of the line camera and the perfect 24-70 lens, but that’s probably not the best scenario if you’re just starting to line up clients. Not only would this cost you thousands of dollars, but if you’re just starting out you might find that your needs shift as you develop your style and your initial purchases end up collecting dust as your gear needs change.
Be it weddings, concerts or senior portraits renting gear on a client to client basis is a great way to keep from having to pay that one lump sum upfront and rather rent gear on a client by client bases building that cost into each shoot that you offer. As you start earning more money and booking more events you’ll be able to justify the purchases of your most essential gear and continue to rent the rest to fill out your needs.
The Test Drive
This is basically the method I used for my rental and I’m happy I did it it allowed me to truly make sure that this was the lens that I wanted and I was able to see first hand how it worked on the photographs that I take.
I was really interested in both the Tokina 12-24mm and the Tokina 11-16mm lenses for my pending ultra wide angle purchase. For under 200 dollars, I was able to test both of these lenses out for an extended period of time and made sure I got the one that worked best for me. Which ended up being the 11-16mm option.
Ultimately, it’s really up to you what you want to rent from them, but odds are they’ll have something that will fit your needs.
My Own Experience
Now that you know what Borrowlenses does and why you might want to rent instead of buy let’s talk about my rental experience through them.
After owning my first DSLR and kit lens for about six months I knew I wanted to start expanding the lens collection that I had and one of the areas that peaked my interest most was the idea of ultra-wide photography. Therefore the Tokina 11-16 and Tokina 12-24mm lenses were of great interest to me and my future photography needs.
Overall, BorrowLenses was outstanding from the moment the process started to the sending the lens back. They answered the questions I had, shipped everything on time and as they advertised, and the return shipment went off without a hitch. They send you the return label in the box and all you have to do is stick it on over the old one and drop it off at your local FedEX shipping center. Very painless.
The lens came packaged tightly in a cardboard box insulated with foam packing material inside a plastic bag for extra waterproof protection. There really is no way this lens could be damaged during shipping so you shouldn’t have to worry about that.
There’s no question in my mind that if you’re looking to rent gear, or are thinking about renting gear, that Borrowlenses is a top choice and one that I recommend fully.
Your Turn: Have You Rented Gear How Do you Feel about It?
Have you rented from Borrowlenses? Tell me how it went for you? Would you rent from them again or recommend them to a friend? I know I sure would!
Since renting this first lens from Borrowlenses I’ve used them a number of times to rent gear for weddings and my own personal needs or curiosity. Every time I’ve done so the experience has been fantastic – the gear arrives quickly, without any issues, and the return shipment is completely hassle free. I stand by my original recommendation and hope that you’ve found this experience and review helpful!
