Each month at PhoGro the community is given a challenge theme to work on. Your theme for the month of January is ‘Black and White’.
General Guidelines For Participating in Monthly Challenges
In order to get the most out of the monthly challenges you should follow these simple rules. Photographs submitted below should be taken within the month of the challenge. If you’d like to share an older photograph please do so in the Share Your Shots forum. You could also share older photographs in the Image Review forum if you’d like to get some ideas of how you might improve your photograph for the challenge at hand.
How to approach this challenge?
Black and white photography is timeless and while it may seem simple, black and white photography can be quite complex. As you approach this challenge the most important thing you’re going to want to consider is the light within the photograph your capturing. You can create very powerful high contrast images by emphasizing the contrast between deep black and bright white or you can try to focus on the details of the scene.
Black and white photography is great at removing the distractions of different colors, but one thing you need to be careful about is that, exposure becomes even more important. The eye will always be directed towards the brighter parts of your images, so make sure that the bright areas are where you want the eyes to go, otherwise your viewer may end up confused.
For some helpful tips I highly recommend the eBook The Essential Guide to Black and White Photography from Digital Photography School. (Note: PhoGro is affiliated with Digital Photography School and earns a small commission on sales through links to their site).
I look forward to seeing all the black and white photographs this month please share them on the forum here when you’re ready!
